Most of us use flash drives to store our data but what if you lose it somewhere or damage it somehow? Some of us external hard disks but what happens if it suddenly crashes? What if your computer’s hard disk fails? There are alternative solutions for backing up your data online while you are working.

There are several free services that offer online backups solutions. Dropbox (click here to download) is a very popular service which “syncs your files online and across your computers”, providing an initial 2GB of space (that can be increased to 8GB for free if you refer other users). You can pay and get more space if you need it.
When you install Dropbox a directory will be created on your computer. All files stored inside this folder will be automatically synchronized with the server online. You can install Dropbox on many computers or on your smartphones and have all your files synched across your different devices. You can also access your files from the dropbox website.

While editing a certain document in your Dropbox folder it is automatically synced everytime you save it. In addition Dropbox lets you share files and folders easily with people you invite. You can also send people links to specific files within your Dropbox. This makes Dropbox perfect for team projects.

If you delete a file by mistake you can restore it or go back to an older version of that file (Dropbox keeps up to 30 days of history for all the files).

Dropbox replaces emailing file attachments to yourself and other people and using USB drives to move files between computers and using complicated backup software and hardware.

Personally I find Dropbox very useful for backups and use it mostly to share files with colleagues or friends. Do you regularly backup your files? Answer our survey below about your preferred backup method.

I’ve been using Opera Mini mobile browser since 2006. I first used the version 3.x on my Nokia 6230 using WAP connection. At the time, with such a slow internet connection provided through WAP, Opera Mini constituted a big difference from the default Nokia browser. The Opera Mini never stopped to please by updating to release 4.0 then changing my phone twice to use version 5 on my Nokia E71. The version 5 was fast with tabbed browsing. I loved it and it made my life really easier with the ability to open a link in new tab.

1 day ago I got notified that a new version of opera mini has been released. I downloaded it and installed it. It was version 6 and it made me feel great. The application was pretty much faster to launch than its predecessor and internet browsing is even faster.Opera provides the fastest web experience for mobile phones and it keeps getting better.

The opera rendering engine displays complete webpages, just like on your computer, and is fully standards compliant. The rendering engine and server-side compression allows the Opera browser to load webpages much more quickly than other mobile phone browsers. The Opera Mini browser uses only a tenth of the bandwidth of other browsers, compressing webpages by up to 90%.

Opera mini has lot of features. It let’s you store your bookmarks online and sync them between multiple devices. It has advanced bookmarks management and it gives you the ability to save pages to be read offline. With the new version of Opera mini you can now also manage your downloads: Start downloading files and keep track of their progress from Downloads. You can pause downloads, when necessary, and resume them when it is convenient.

I love this browser, it makes my life really easier when browsing the web from my mobile phone!

Search inside Facebook is becoming more current. Facebook users tend to search inside facebook for things they want. Facebook has been working on enhancing its internal search engine and if you are a business and you want your Facebook page to rank high on search results then it is important to understand how Facebook search works.

The conversation about Facebook ranking factors didn’t reach a mature level yet since the platform itself is still in its infancy. There is no concrete solutions yet but some tests have shown that search ranking takes personalization into consideration. The way results appear when you are searching for a Facebook page, group, event, app or place is if:

You Like It

Your Friend Likes It

You’re Invited To It

You’ve Visited It Before

You List It As An Interest

First let’s take into consideration that Facebook has 2 different types of search:

The AutoComplete Box

The All Results

The AutoComplete Box

The AutoComplete Box is Facebook’s most prominent search box. It follows you wherever you go on the website. Depending on what you’re searching for & the history of your account, between 0-8 results will populate the AutoComplete box (0 if you’re a brand new user).

The AutoComplete Box populates with suggested results as you type. Click “enter” and you’re taken directly to the result that ranks #1, whether or not that page is even within the Facebook network.

What Ranks: AutoComplete Box

Your name (Your own profile will automatically rank #1 for the first 2-3 letters in your name)

Events you are invited to (Even if you don’t RSVP …)

Friend with keyword in name

Second degree friend (friend of a friend) with keyword in name

Questions with keyword in it

Apps you have used

Group you have joined

Page you have liked

Page relating to your interests

Page a friend likes

The All Results

In the “All Results” you will find all Facebook content types: people, pages, groups, apps, events and web results.

What Ranks: All Results

People, a.k.a friend or second degree friend with keyword in name

Pages with keyword in page name in tandem with total likes. Can outrank friend with keyword in name…

Posts with keyword in posts (status updates, links shared, etc.)

Web results, powered by Bing

The results seem to be heavily affected by personalization, though you can’t always see how the personalization factors affect your search results (i.e.: the results don’t mention how many of your friends “like” a certain page).

What Ranks: Pages

There are some general conclusions as to what plays a large role with ranking for Facebook pages:

Keywords in page name

Keyword density in on-page content

Personalization

Hot places to put keywords are: Name and Description (box beneath default image)

Also, having a lot of “likes” definitely works to your advantage.

I hope this will help you figure out what to do in order to rank your fan page high in the internal Facebook Search.

The user that wishes can display ads inside his profile page under his profile picture per example. The Ad can also be displayed in the photo gallery on top of the comments text area. I think this will increase the number of publishers which makes it more profitable for Facebook and some users will benefit and get money from “clicks” performed on ads displayed inside their profiles.

You started to hear about Web 3.0 but still don’t know what is it about? You still don’t know what is exactly the Web 2.0? In this article I am going to introduce both web 2 and web 3.

Web 2.0

The term web 2.0 consists of giving site visitors the ability to make changes to the web pages, linking people to other users, providing fast and efficient ways to share content and expanding access to the internet beyond the computer. A Web 2.0 site gives its user the choice to interact and collaborate in a virtual community. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites like facebook and myspace, blogs, wikis, video-sharing sites like youtube and other web applications.

The Web 2.0 wasn’t a technology upgrade to the Web 1.0. The same technology is still used but with added layers of abstraction. The client-side/web browser technologies typically used in Web 2.0 development are Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax), Adobe Flash and the Adobe Flex framework, and JavaScript/Ajax frameworks such as Yahoo! UI Library, Dojo Toolkit, MooTools, and jQuery. Ajax programming uses JavaScript to upload and download new data from the web server without undergoing a full page reload.

To permit the user to continue to interact with the page, communications such as data requests going to the server are separated from data coming back to the page (asynchronously). Otherwise, the user would have to routinely wait for the data to come back before they can do anything else on that page, just as a user has to wait for a page to complete the reload. This also increases overall performance of the site, as the sending of requests can complete quicker independent of blocking and queueing required to send data back to the client.

On the server side, Web 2.0 uses many of the same technologies as Web 1.0. What has begun to change in Web 2.0 is the way this data is formatted. To share its data with other sites, a web site must be able to generate output in machine-readable formats such as XML, RSS, and JSON. When a site’s data is available in one of these formats, another website can use it to integrate a portion of that site’s functionality into itself, linking the two together.

Web 3.0

There are many definitions of the Web 3.0. Semantic Web and personalization are of the most used definitions. Semantic Web means that everything is linked, it is all about relationships and if there are enough relationships then we have contexts created. In Web 3.0 content will be generated by computers instead of humans generating content.

Web 3.0 is going to be like having a personal assistant who know everything about you and can access all the information on the internet to answer any question. Web 3.0 will be a giant database. Web 2.0 uses internet to make connections between people while web 3.0 will use internet to make connections with information.

An upgrade to the browsers technologies will occur. As you search the web the browser will learn what you are interested in. You will need to ask only: “I want to see a funny movie and then eat at a good Mexican restaurant. What are my options?”

Search engines will be smarter. A web 3.0 search engine will be able to find not only the keywords in your search but also interpret the context of your request.

If your laptop/desktop is running Microsoft Windows Vista OS (which most consumer computers that shipped beginning in January 2007 do), it already runs parts that meet the current requirements of Windows 7. If the laptop runs Vista, it will run Windows 7.
For non-Vista systems you can download the Upgrade Advisor to see if your laptop qualifies. To give you a little more detail, to run Windows 7 your computer must have the following:

A processor rated at 1 Gigahertz or faster
Even if you bought a laptop in 2003, when the first batch of Pentium M processors (codenamed “Banias”) came out, Windows 7 appears to have it covered as well, as long as you have at least 1GB of memory, 16GB of hard drive space, and a DX9 graphics card. Even low-powered cheap desktop PCs will have at least a 1.6GHz processor these days, and likely have 2.0GHz or faster CPUs.

1GB of RAM (2GB for 64-bit Windows 7)
More memory doesn’t hurt either, especially with older computers that ship with 512MB. Memory modules are inexpensive, easily accessible, and can mean the difference between a clunker and Windows 7 bliss.

At least 16GB of storage space (20GB for 64-bit Windows 7)

A DX9-compatible graphics card, with the WDDM 1.0 driver
A laptop with an ATI or nVidia chipset is a really good sign that it’ll run Windows 7, but make sure you have the latest graphics driver handy. Windows 7 has native driver support for legacy nVidia and ATI cards. Updated drivers are just a precautionary step.

Even laptops going back 5 or 6 years can run Windows 7, and simple hardware upgrades can be made to ensure an optimal user experience. If your laptop can’t run Windows 7, it probably belongs in a museum. The majority of desktop PCs bought since 2006 should be able to run Windows 7 fine, particularly if you bought with future-proofing in mind. If your PC is older than 2004, then you should run the Upgrade Advisor to test your system. Microsoft’s tool will let you know if you need a minor upgrade (more hard drive space, more memory, discrete graphics), or if it’s a lost cause (too slow processor, older integrated graphics with no upgrade slot). Remember, there’s no shame if you keep XP running or maybe try out Linux to freshen up that old system.
